Tuff Puff

I made this for one of my cousin's kids, whose birthday is right before Thanksgiving. Its from the movie Free Birds, which he hasn't seen, hence he kept thinking it was a baby chicken instead of a baby turkey, the idea of which he would not let go. On the bright side, remove the waddle and it will make a perfect Easter present.

Solrock

I was planning on doing this pattern for a June CAL on Ravelry, but I didn't have time to start it. So I decided to do it for the Catch-up month in July, but I didn't have time to finish it. Finally, I was able to complete it. It just proves that what seem to be the simplest patterns sometimes end up taking you the longest.

Materials

Orange and yellow yarn
Stuffing
Black and red felt
Thin black ribbon
Appropriate crochet hook for your yarn weight

Basic Body Pattern

With orange, ch 2
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around (18 sc)
Rnd 4: Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (24 sc)
Rnd 5: Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (30 sc)
Rnd 6: Sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (36 sc)
Rnd 7: Sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (42 sc)
Rnd 8: Sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (48 sc)
Rnd 9: Sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (54 sc)
Rnd 10: Sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc around (60 sc)
Rnd 11-3: sc in each sc around
Rnd 14: Sc in next 8 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (54 sc)
Rnd 15: Sc in next 7 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (48 sc)
Rnd 16: Sc in next 6 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (42 sc)
Rnd 17: Sc in next 5 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (36 sc)
Rnd 18: Sc in next 4 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (30 sc)
Rnd 19: Sc in next 3 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (24 sc)
Rnd 20: Sc in next 2 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (18 sc)
Rnd 21: Sc in next 1 sc, sc dec in next 2 sc around (12 sc)
Rnd 22: Sc dec around (6 sc)
Fasten off.

Long prongs (Make 4)

With yellow, ch 6
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (5 sc)
Row 2: sc in each sc across
Row 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc across, 2 sc in last sc (7 sc)
Row 4-8: Row 2: sc in each sc across
Row 9: sc dec in first 2 sc, sc across, sc dec in last 2 sc (5 sc)
Row 10: sc in each sc across
Row 11: sc dec in first 2 sc, sc across, sc dec in last 2 sc (3 sc)
Row 12: sc in each sc across
Row 13: sc dec in remaining 3 sc (1 sc)
Row 14: sc in remaining sc
Fasten off.
Repeat Rows 1-14 once more, and sew the two identical pieces together, leaving an opening at the bottom. Turn inside out, and sew to body--there should be one long prong on the top, the bottom, and on either side equidistant from one another.

Short prongs (Make 4)

With yellow, ch 4
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (3 sc)
Row 2: sc in each sc across
Row 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc across, 2 sc in last sc (5 sc)
Row 4-6: Row 2: sc in each sc across
Row 7: sc dec in first 2 sc, sc across, sc dec in last 2 sc (3 sc)
Row 8: sc in each sc across
Row 9: sc dec in remaining 3 sc (1 sc)
Row 10: sc in remaining sc
Fasten off. Repeat Rows 1-10 and follow instructions for long prongs.

Spikes (Make 10)

With yellow, ch 3
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across (2 sc)
Row 2: sc in each sc across
Fasten off. Fold in half lengthwise, close up the sides, and sew on body as shown (You'll need five on each side in one long column down the middle).
N.B. While the pattern is the same for all spikes, you may want to make them of varying sizes (either by using a different sized hook or crocheting tighter or looser--which is how I did it). Put the largest ones in the center.

Eyes (Make 2)

With yellow, ch 2
Rnd 1: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook (8 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc around (24 sc)
Fasten off.
Sew to body on either side of spikes.

Back (Make 2)

With yellow, ch 7
Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, 3 sc in last ch sp, sc on other side of ch loop (16 sc)
Rnd 2: sc in each sc around
Fasten off.
Sew to back on either side of spikes.

Finishing

With black felt, cut a strip long enough to fit the width of each eye. Sew or glue in the middle of the eye. With red, cut a small dot (Mine is really more square-shaped) and place it in the middle. Take the ribbon and glue it around the circumference of the eye (you may need to cut it in several pieces to make it circular). Cut 12 small pieces of approximately equal length and glue 3 of them to the top and bottom of each eye.

Optional: You may want to use fabric stiffener on each of the prongs--if you notice in the pictures, mine are slightly lopsided, because they are a bit too heavy to stand on their own.
